Happy "Bird"-day

by Kris Hankins

Here is a cute birthday card using basic stamping skills and some fun paper cuts. I have been making these cute little birds for years. So simple, yet so cute.

Happy Bird-day

Materials

  • Paper and Cardstock
    • Bazzill Singles
    • Scrap of golden yellow cardstock
    • Favorite white stamping cardstock
    • Basic Grey 6"x6" pad, Lime Rickey     ( BG-6x6-LIM   $5.99)
  • Stamps
    • Background/Shadow stamp of choice
  • Inks and Chalks
  • Embellishments
  • Tools
    • Marvy Extra Jumbo Circle Punch, 1 1/2”     ( MAR-EJ-Circle   $11.99)
    • Punch Bunch Small Egg Punch     ( PB-Sm-egg   $4.99)
  • Adhesives

Instructions

  • Punch a 1 ½” circle from the Bazzill Pacific blue cardstock.

  • Punch two (2) egg shapes from the same cardstock.

  • Slice 3 or 4 random slivers of Bazzill Kraft cardstock for the tree branches.
Make them approximately 4-5” long and ¼ “ wide at thickest end.

  • Cut off a random slice from the circle (see photo).

  • Cut one of the egg/oval shapes in half.

  • Cut a small triangle from the scrap of golden cardstock.

  • Using CraftT chalks and a cotton swap, chalk all the edges in a dark blue to give the pieces definition.
Next, chalk the belly of the bird using some rose and yellow chalk.

  • Using Memories Sand ink, stamp your shadow/background stamp image onto white cardstock.
Trim and mat onto Bazzill Forest green cardstock.

  • Lay out your sliced “branches” in a random pattern before you glue them down. Find the best layout that is pleasing to your eye.

  • Glue in place using a Sakura Quickie glue pen.

DISCOVERY - This pen is great for small and narrow paper pieces.

These are the best glue pens I’ve come across.
Others in the past have failed me, but I highly recommend these; I have had great success with them.

  • Cut the ends of the branches in a random manner, letting them hang over ¼” to ½”.

  • Make a fold A2 card base from the Bazzill Forest green cardstock.

  • Attach printed paper from Basic Grey’s Lime Ricky collection onto the front of card.

  • Using adhesive foam squares, attach the shadow stamped layer to the front of the card.

  • To construct the little bird, glue the full punched oval piece to the underside of the “tail” area.
Glue the half size punched oval to the side of the bird (straight edge at top) to form a wing.
Cut and glue a little yellow triangle for the beak and glue it under edge of facial area.
Add a black pearl or crystal for its eye.

  • Next, attach the bird to the card using adhesive foam squares.
Makes sure he sits on one of the branches.

  • Now you have you finished birdie card.
Stamp your favorite sentiment on the inside.

I used mine for a happy “bird” day card.
