Happy Happy Day (Kathy Berger)

Happy Happy Day
by Kathy Berger

When I was a child my wonderful mother would sometimes surprise one or more of her four children with a small gift or a special outing. There was no special occasion for these gifts; they were just for a "Happy Happy Day."

Though today is Mother's Day, it is also a day I want to share a "Happy Happy Day" gift I have made for my daughter. She is in graduate school now, and in her first "real" apartment, the first place of her own, and she is trying to make it feel like home. I thought that a bouquet of spring flowers would add a nice touch. But since we are paying for graduate school, I also needed to be a bit budget conscious. I bought the flowers on sale when my local craft store closed, so all I needed was a special vase.

I started with a plain dollar store vase. Yup. $1. I brought it home, washed it, dried it, and then rubbed the exterior with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue and fingerprints. I cut a scrap of contact paper using my Southwest Panel Frantic Stamper Precision Die. I carefully removed the unwanted pieces of the contact paper, then removed the backing and applied the resulting stencil to my vase. I then applied etching creme, following the directions on the bottle. After washing off the residue and removing the stencil, these are the results:

Pretty fabulous, don't you think?

I added the glass marbles, the "faux water" resin, and the flowers, and for a few dollars I think I have a pretty wonderful "Happy Happy Day" gift for my daughter. I can't wait to give it to her!

I hope you are having a "Happy Happy Day" yourself!

  1. Kathy, I am just blown away by your vase. If you hadn't said that the flowers were not real, I would have thought they came from your garden. The vase is the big star though. I didn't think about using these for etching glass. Watch out dollar store!
