A Day to Remember

by Lis Whiting

A Day to Remember

I love the “block” look but I find it difficult to line up all the little squares so that there is even spacing. Even when I use a guide, I usually get at least one crooked! So, here is an easy way to have that great blocked look – without the work.

The trick with this look is that your card base and your strips must be the same color cardstock.

Materials

  • Paper and Cardstock
    • Bazzill cardstock, Black     (   BAZ-10-1075   $0.59), 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and ten 8 1/2" x 1/8" strips
    • Websters Pages, Seaside Retreat/Garden Gala/Nature's Story     ( WEB-6x6-WPK17   $6.99), 5 1/4" x 4"
  • Embellishments
    • Gold Crown Brad     ( HOTP-BR-81110   $2.99)
    • Button Bonanza, Vintage     ( BTN-vint   $6.99)
    • Vintage Findings, Metallic Ephemera Gold     ( MM-S-32497   $2.99)
    • Cloud 9 Designs Clear Epoxy Quote Stickers, Simple Thoughts, Great Memories     ( C9-ES-1912   $3.89)
    • Tim Holtz Idealogy,Game Spinners     ( ADV-TH-92717   $5.49)
    • Tim Holtz Idealogy, Sprocket Gears     ( ADV-TH-92691   $4.49)
    • Tim Holtz Idealogy, Long Fasteners     ( ADV-TH-92703   $3.49)
    • Pearl Metallic Large Spiral Clips     ( CR-LCL-Prl   $3.99)
    • Crystal Rhinestones, Silver     ( KAI-RH-700   $1.99)
  • Tools

Instructions

  • Fold the black Bazzill cardstock in half to make the base card.
The card will open from the bottom.
    Set the base aside.

  • Place the balloon paper (pre-cut to 4" x 5 1/4") in landscape orientation, centered on the card base.
Do not glue into place yet.

  • Lay down four of the 1/8 strips vertically across the card, spacing them fairly evenly (no need to measure.)
The strips will overlap the edges of the card; they will be trimmed later.

When you have the strips placed where you want them, glue them into place. (I used a glue stick.)

  • Once the vertical strips are adhered to the patterned paper, turn the paper sideways and place down three horizontal strips.
Start in the middle and then place one strip on either side.
Once you are happy with the result, glue down the strips.
Trim the excess strips from your paper.

  • Punch two holes in the paper and mount the brad embellishements.
Be sure to leave enough space for the epoxy sticker when attaching the gear and game spinner brad embellishment.

  • Mount the paper to the card.

  • Cut out the large balloon from a second sheet of the Webster's balloon paper and adhere it over top of the same design with mounting tape.

  • Add the epoxy saying to the lower right of the card.

  • Add remaining embellishments.

  • Place a rhinestone on top of the brad that holds the game spinner to the gear.

  • NOTE: If you want 1/4" strips instead of 1/8" strips, be sure to adjust the size of the paper to 5" x 3 3/4" so that the outside border will match.

I hope you enjoyed this simple technique. Although I used both horizontal and vertical strips, you can use just one for a different look. Try it with a different color or even glitter cardstock. See you next time!

A Quick Hello in Black and White

by Kathy Berger

A Quick Hello in Black and White

Because I like to do more complicated cards, especially kinetic cards, people seem to think that is ALL that I like to do, but in reality, quick and easy cards are something I love, too. I really love a card that is clean and simple, perhaps even bordering on elegant. And I especially love a card I can put together in just a few minutes that still looks like I fussed over it.

I also seriously love the beauty of black and white cards. There is something about the stark contrast that appeals to me. I have rarely seen a black and white card that didn't appeal to me.

Here is a quick card (seriously, under 10 minutes) made with one stamp set, black ink, and a piece of ribbon. This basic card idea can be used for nearly any occasion; just change up the stamps and sentiment... it is one of my "go to" cards, for those occasions that sneak up on me that demand a great card when I don't have a lot of time.

Materials

  • Paper and Cardstock
    • white cardstock (5 1/2" x 8 1/2", folded to make a standard card, and 5 1/4" x 4")
    • Post-it™ Notes, for masking
  • Stamps
    • Stampendous Clear Stamps, Dotty Daisy     ( STM-SSC-1002   $14.99)
  • Inks and Embossing Powders
  • Embellishments
    • Gross-grain Ribbon, 1/2" width, Black     ( CR-GGR2-BK   $0.45/yard), about 15 inches
    • Small Rhinestones, Clear, such as those available in Kaiser's Rhinestone strips     ( KAI-LR-451   $3.99)
  • Tools
    • black marker (I like Sharpie Markers because they don't bleed through)
  • Adhesive of choice

Instructions

  • Mask off about 1 1/2" on one side of the 4" x 5 1/4" panel using Post-it™ notes.

  • Stamp the large flower stamp somewhat randomly on the uncovered portion of the panel, making sure to stamp off the edges and onto the mask.

  • Stamp the dotted swirl between the stamped flowers, also being sure to go off the edges.

  • Use the black marker to fill in with more dots right up to the flowers.
    Cover the area as desired.

Please note: the picture below shows the stamped area on the right; I stamp the panel UPSIDE-DOWN because I find it easier to have the area I am stamping on my right than on my left. The area being stamped will be on the LEFT side of the card!

  • Remove the mask.

  • Tie the black ribbon around the panel, aligning it at the edge of the stamping.
Apply a little adhesive if needed to hold in place.

  • Stamp the sentiment at an angle at the lower right corner of the panel.

  • On the inside of the main card, at the bottom of the right side, stamp two of the smaller flowers and some swirls.
Fill in dots as needed to fill in the card.

  • Affix the card panel centered on the front of the card.

  • Add a tiny rhinestone to the center of each of the large flowers.
