A Day to Remember

by Lis Whiting

A Day to Remember

I love the “block” look but I find it difficult to line up all the little squares so that there is even spacing. Even when I use a guide, I usually get at least one crooked! So, here is an easy way to have that great blocked look – without the work.

The trick with this look is that your card base and your strips must be the same color cardstock.

Materials

  • Paper and Cardstock
    • Bazzill cardstock, Black     (   BAZ-10-1075   $0.59), 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and ten 8 1/2" x 1/8" strips
    • Websters Pages, Seaside Retreat/Garden Gala/Nature's Story     ( WEB-6x6-WPK17   $6.99), 5 1/4" x 4"
  • Embellishments
    • Gold Crown Brad     ( HOTP-BR-81110   $2.99)
    • Button Bonanza, Vintage     ( BTN-vint   $6.99)
    • Vintage Findings, Metallic Ephemera Gold     ( MM-S-32497   $2.99)
    • Cloud 9 Designs Clear Epoxy Quote Stickers, Simple Thoughts, Great Memories     ( C9-ES-1912   $3.89)
    • Tim Holtz Idealogy,Game Spinners     ( ADV-TH-92717   $5.49)
    • Tim Holtz Idealogy, Sprocket Gears     ( ADV-TH-92691   $4.49)
    • Tim Holtz Idealogy, Long Fasteners     ( ADV-TH-92703   $3.49)
    • Pearl Metallic Large Spiral Clips     ( CR-LCL-Prl   $3.99)
    • Crystal Rhinestones, Silver     ( KAI-RH-700   $1.99)
  • Tools

Instructions

  • Fold the black Bazzill cardstock in half to make the base card.
The card will open from the bottom.
    Set the base aside.

  • Place the balloon paper (pre-cut to 4" x 5 1/4") in landscape orientation, centered on the card base.
Do not glue into place yet.

  • Lay down four of the 1/8 strips vertically across the card, spacing them fairly evenly (no need to measure.)
The strips will overlap the edges of the card; they will be trimmed later.

When you have the strips placed where you want them, glue them into place. (I used a glue stick.)

  • Once the vertical strips are adhered to the patterned paper, turn the paper sideways and place down three horizontal strips.
Start in the middle and then place one strip on either side.
Once you are happy with the result, glue down the strips.
Trim the excess strips from your paper.

  • Punch two holes in the paper and mount the brad embellishements.
Be sure to leave enough space for the epoxy sticker when attaching the gear and game spinner brad embellishment.

  • Mount the paper to the card.

  • Cut out the large balloon from a second sheet of the Webster's balloon paper and adhere it over top of the same design with mounting tape.

  • Add the epoxy saying to the lower right of the card.

  • Add remaining embellishments.

  • Place a rhinestone on top of the brad that holds the game spinner to the gear.

  • NOTE: If you want 1/4" strips instead of 1/8" strips, be sure to adjust the size of the paper to 5" x 3 3/4" so that the outside border will match.

I hope you enjoyed this simple technique. Although I used both horizontal and vertical strips, you can use just one for a different look. Try it with a different color or even glitter cardstock. See you next time!
